5 Unique Ways to Show Your Team You’re Thankful For Them

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and that means it is time for turkey, family, and most importantly, giving thanks.  With how busy it can be running a law firm, especially towards the end of the year, it may be challenging to go out of your way to express your gratitude as you should.

This year, don’t forget to show your appreciation to the team that helped you get where you are.  Here are 5 unique ways to do just that.

ONE | Invest in Their Career

80% of employees seeking new jobs said they are concerned about their career growth at their current firm.  This means it is highly probable that an employee in your law firm is feeling that same concern.  What better way to show them appreciation than to sign them up for continuing education (paid for by you and on your clock), so they can expand upon a skill they’ve always shown interest in.

Investing in your employees talents isn’t you saying that they’re not good enough as they are.  In the contrary, it is acknowledging that they have a high level of potential and you want to help them expand on that potential and reach their highest points.

A few ideas of this would be:

  • One-on-one ongoing mentorship with a senior paralegal through Del.Trust

  • Purchase an online course to expand on a particular skill in their practice area

  • An upcoming legal conference

TWO | Office Upgrade

Most legal professionals we know love a brag-worthy office.  An office that is organized, clean, and vibes with their style is most definitely going to promote their best professional version of themselves.

I can remember back when my attorney gave me $300 to change up the décor in my new office.  It was the best day ever!  It doesn’t have to be a ton of money.  $100 will even light them up!

Consider a gift card or budget to upgrade or add some items to their office.  This may include new color pens, art work, organization supplies, a new chair… whatever they wish to spend it on!

THREE | Work from Home Coupons

54% of employees are considering leaving their job if they’re not afforded some form of flexibility in where and when they work.  Though we understand that not ever law firm is set up and able to accommodate a fully remote or hybrid schedule.  I can guarantee that you all can afford and have a laptop somewhere so your employee can get six or twelve work from home days per year.

You, of course, can set the parameters in which the employee will work from home.  For instance, maybe a good day to work from home would be a day where the employee needs to focus 100% on legal research for an appellate brief or drafting a memorandum.

I guarantee your employee will light up with those in their hand, knowing they can pick a day each month to work from home and focus on something specific.

If work from home is an absolute “no” for your law firm, consider coupons to leave early, come in late, extra paid day off, etc.

FOUR | Showcase them on your website

This sounds incredibly simple and non-impactful, but I promise you it isn’t.  If you’re not showcasing your paralegals and assistants on your law firm’s website, I highly recommend you do so and surprise them with the feature!

Paralegals and assistants get a strong sense of appreciation for what they bring to your law practice when you brag about them to the public and your current and potential clients.  When you have them on your website.

As an added benefit, it really speaks highly toward your employer brand for future active and passive candidates and will help to improve your legal recruiting process.

FIVE | The Gift of Time

I think a lot of us can agree that one of the most impactful ways to know someone appreciates us is when they give us their time.  We all know how busy law firm owners are, and your team will feel your sincere appreciation for them if you take the time for coffee, or lunch.

During this time, be sure to ask them about their career goals, personal goals, what interests them the most, and work to identify how you can support that development in their lives.  In the future with this knowing, you will be able to show your appreciation in more targeted ways that lets them feel heard and understood!

CONCLUSION

In whatever way you decide to show your appreciation for your team will be great, because it really is the thought that counts (I know, corny).  Employers that take the time to care for their employees are rewarded with a higher chance of loyalty and mutual appreciation.

Here at Del.Trust, we constantly work with our legal recruiting and 1099 freelance staffing clients on how to better improve the retention strategy within their current team structure.  Never hesitate to reach out to us if you need support!
